KARRIKARRINYA THEATRE CO.

Karrikarrinya Theatre Collective performs works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander theatre artists.

Karrikarrinya Theatre Collective is the amalgamation of three projects: Sista Act Women of Country, Pot Luck and Never Turning Back, which were produced and performed in 2007. K.T.C (Karrikarrinya Theatre Collective) has been created to promote local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander actors. Karrikarrinya is a Kaurna word meaning “flying”, which is symbolic of creative energy, and new pathways.

“The Cherry Pickers was written in 1968 and is historically the most significant play in Aboriginal/Australian literature for it is the first drama to be written in English by an Aboriginal and it became the first Aboriginal dramatic production of modern theatre, creating a three act dramatisation performed publicly by a black cast. The Cherry Pickers is a play of humanity, of the search for justice, of a return to spirituality. It is an intimate, albeit dramatised, glimpse of the family. It is communication, a gift that, should your heart glimpse the key, will enable you to understand…”

This play is a thought provoking comedy set in earlier times in NSW and will be performed as part of the Fringe 2008.
